The Lincolnshire village of Aswardby is located 4 miles north west of Spilsby in the East Lindsay district of the county. It boasts the Tally Ho Inn which was built around 1750 and nearby on the Aswardby Estate races took place on Thursday 31st March 1842. The course was in the neighbourhood of Standbridge Hill, a mile from the village, starting in the Long Green Meadow and proceeding over ridge and furrow towards Aswardby Church. A turning flag was situated at Edgewood Farm and after turning the runners headed back to the winning flag at the Long Green Meadow. Entries were made at the White Lion, where weigh-ins took place, and the venue also hosted the after race Ordinary. The principal Aswardby Sweepstake attracted a field of 15 and was won by Mr Miller’s Dick Forester, while the final Sweepstake went to Mr Lee’s Post Captain, beating Queen Bee and Giraffe. |
